9/11 Perspectives: The Balance of Power in American Politics

This video is part of a special Council on Foreign Relations series that explores how 9/11 changed international relations and US foreign policy. In this video, James M. Lindsay, Senior Vice President, Director of Studies, and Maurice R. Greenberg Chair at the Council on Foreign Relations traces the shifts in the balance of power in American politics following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “What we witnessed in the months after the attack was a political dynamic as old as the American republic. When the country feels imperiled, the White House gains in power and Congress loses it,” says Lindsay. However, ten years after the attacks, “the era of terrorism has given way to the era of fiscal austerity,” Lindsay argues, and “we now have American politics that looks more normal, that is much more focused inward, and features much more heated battles between Capitol Hill and the White House.” SPEAKER: James M. Lindsay, Senior Vice President, Director of Studies, and Maurice R. Greenberg Chair, Council on Foreign Relations www.cfr.org

Terrorism is no longer the issue “du jour” since it’s the financial terrorists that are of a greater threat to the US citizenry.

Irrespective of who destroyed the WTC towers, the right wing majority conducted an attack on left wing policies in government. The majority used the event to promote the global war on terror.

Public sector jobs were put under attack. The major tax cut, the de-regulation, the two invasions and the constant assault on “gvt” have placed public sector jobs under attack.

Justice was not attained. More death and profit from destruction was.

If it is “normal” 2 declare war on science, human rights & respect for dignity of “the least of these,” I don’t WANT 2 live in “normal” America! In all spheres domestically, rhetoric has ratcheted up 2 hate speech, blaming victims, outrageous accusations of motives, utter contempt 4 fellow citizens, based on the most superficial of differences. This country is falling in2 totalitarianism of desperation, superstition, retribution & cut-throat exploitation as Wall St. LOLs 2 the Fed. We r dying.
